The Katherine Community Market Breakfast in the Park and Opening …

  • Quote of the day “a pleasant surprise”
  • Estimates have been reported that “around 5000 people passed through” the Ryan Park venue for the Breakfast in the Park event (opened by sitting member for Katherine, Willem Westra Van Holthe and Norma Higgins), enjoying the light family entertainment while relaxing in the fair like ambience.
  • Norma, (winner of the NT Rural Women’s Award 2008), realised her vision, of establishing a farmers’ style market in the heart of the business centre for the Katherine agricultural district. Also winner of the biggest smile award.
  • Approximatly $30,000 has been directly contributed and circulated in the regional economy.
Direct benefit to the community is being realised by organisations like Grow NT and Senior Citizens, entertainers (Canta-Billay Choir and Katie Oliver), the Katherine Region Food Processing Group, Katherine Town Council, other Gov’t entities, several local businesses and most importantly, Stall Operators reported enthusiastic responses from the patrons attending.
  • Some Stall operators sold out and needed to send for more items to stock their tables.
  • Katherine Town Council has achieved the objective, to make better use of the Ryan park facility and in turn the ratepayers of the township are receiving a direct return on the investment (approximately $150,000) made by Council, to enhance facilities at the venue a couple of years ago.
  • Some local traders reported an increase to foot traffic through their doors compared to typical Saturday morning trade and one commented that he “didn’t expect it to be busy because of the V8 Super Cars” [on in Darwin over the same weekend].
  • An observation by some Stall Operators was that “a lot of tourists attended“.
  • Volunteers from as far away as Guatemala City and the United Kingdom assisted the organisers.
  • Several casual employment positions were taken up and will continue.
  • A training outcome has been realised, with course material derived from the Ryan Park Market Project.

Commercial Kitchen

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

Katherine Community Market joins forces with Katherine Regional Food Group who operate commercially approved kitchen facilities that are available to individuals and small enterprise to make their own products.

The two respective ventures are independent but go hand in hand in such a way that they are in effect collaborative partners, have mutual community minded objectives and are both “Not for Profit” operations, contact us for information.

Access to the kitchen overcomes several problems for individuals and small start-up enterprises that will otherwise need planning and health approvals for home based businesses.

Simple, take along your ingredients and recipe, make and package in the commercial facility.

Sell at the market, it’s just up the street from Ryan Park in the Red Cross complex.

Anything like a crate of ginger beer, a ute load of mango chutney and things like bakery items are feasible.
